Does our language betray us?

has anyone else noticed how you can tell who is new or fading, who was a long timer, who was never really into it, etc just from the way posts and language are structured?

i think it struck me when i heard someone say they did their utmost to leave the organization..do your utmost..not a common expression in most people's worlds so it still twigged a jw connection.

reading steve hassan's book on mind control reminded me of just how important language is in cult group membership.

I find this one of the most interesting aspects of reading here on JWD. Various backgrounds and various degrees of being free of JWs and/or religion in general. Since I'm still active and "exemplary" (on the exterior only) I freely swing back and forth between dubspeak and JWDspeak.

Just in case anyone's trying to keep up with the "pure language", did you know dubs in general don't say "The Society" any more? If you're talking about some new policy or piece of correspondence you say "The Branch". If you're talking about doctrine, you're supposed to say "The Bible says" or "my study of the Bible says". That way the Borg puppet strings moving your lips won't be as visible to the outside world.

Absolutely. I mentioned above that this talk and subsequent book have become "embarrasingly absurd". I was just looking at it strictly from the viewpoint of giving JF Rutherford every remotely conceivable benefit of the doubt and taking the title of the talk strictly at face value. Even doing that, we passed the "2 million humans still alive" point somewhere around 2005. I'm a layperson numbers nerd at heart.

BTW, TD, I always enjoy your posts. Thanks for adding to this thread. I even learned a new vocab word: "SALVIFIC". I thought you were just pulling that one out of a nether region, but my handy Webster's proved me wrong. Sorry for privately imputing bad motives to you TD.

UPDATE: Da Judge became an undeniable liar two years ago!!!!! Wooo hoooo!!!. Here's the results of my Googlin' and Calculatin'.

As of 2005, there were only 1,740,432 people aged 95-99 on the planet. Here's the link.

And as I posted earlier: "In 1998, there were 135,000 centenarians in the world." Here's the link again:

So 1.74 million (aged 95-99) plus 0.13 million (age over 100) = 1.87 million people on the planet over 95 yrs old as of 2005.

So...................as of 2005, there were less than 2 million people alive on the planet who were of an "age of understanding" during Da Judge's talk (even though almost none of these people actually heard the talk). Now, if EVERY ONE of these roughly 1.9 million people are deemed worthy of survival through the Big A (another big leap) and the Big A comes TODAY (yet another big leap), Da Judge was still a BIG, FAT, (USUALLY DRUNK) LIAR!!!!

Phew!!!!

Glad I got that off my chest.

So, by the infamousone's idea of needing to be at least 6 years old, we're right around the tipping point right now.

I'll keep digging on this issue of vital importance.

Absurd? Yeah, we went past absurd a long time ago.

Statistically false? Not quite there yet. Taking Theinfamousone's 6 year old age of understanding concept, here's what I'm lookin for:

When will the earth have less than 2 million inhabitants who were born prior to 1912? or 1918 if we just take the title at pure face value?

I don't think we're there yet.

Now as for Crazy..............Well, we passed Crazy quite a few miles back.

J Dubs Stop Giving and Pigs Will Fly!!

(OK, that's my poetry attempt for today. I'll stop now. )

"Da Judge" first gave that talk with a little wiggle room in the title on February 24, 1918: "The World Has Ended; Millions Now Living MAY Never Die"

Five weeks go by, a lot of dubs were slurping it up without batting an eye, so he changed it to the whopper we've all come to know and love: "The World Has Ended; Millions Now Living WILL NEVER Die."

Has anyone on JWD ever done a post showing what year the title of that talk will become, not just embarrasingly absurd, but a flat-out, mortality-table-justified, bald-faced lie?

I'm thinking..........2020? Anyone?

If not, I'll start Googlin' and Calculatin'.

so hello everyone... i'm a brand new member and happy to be here... to know i am not alone.

i have been a jw since birth however i was never "encouraged"/forced to get baptised by my parents (lucky me!

) i always considered myself a member on the fringes of my congeregation and almost everybody treated me as a member even though i never commented or went in service.
